Etymology of Mesembryanthemum:
Gk. mesos = in the middle, between; embryon = fruit (embryo); anthemon = flower. The flowers need mid-day sunshine to open.
Etymology of luederitzii:
Named after either the town or Franz Adolf Eduard Luderitz (1834-1886) after whom the Namibian town of Luderitz is named. Franz was a German merchant and pioneer.
