Gk. mesos = in the middle, between; embryon = fruit (embryo); anthemon = flower. The flowers need mid-day sunshine to open.
Etymology of mariae:
Named after Mary, for many South African plants referring to Mrs Mary Galpin, wife of the collector of E. E. Galpin.
