Etymology of Mesembryanthemum:
Gk. mesos = in the middle, between; embryon = fruit (embryo); anthemon = flower. The flowers need mid-day sunshine to open.
Etymology of maximiliani:
Named after acclaimed botanist Friedrich Richard Rudolf Schlechter (1872–1925) or his brother, the plant collector Rudolf Schlechter Maximilian Schlechter (1874-1960).
