Etymology of Mesembryanthemum:
Gk. mesos = in the middle, between; embryon = fruit (embryo); anthemon = flower. The flowers need mid-day sunshine to open.

Named after Mary Page (1867 - 1925), a botanical artist of the Bolus Herbarium at the University of Cape Town
