Etymology of Mesembryanthemum:
Gk. mesos = in the middle, between; embryon = fruit (embryo); anthemon = flower. The flowers need mid-day sunshine to open.
Etymology of simpsonii:
Named after a Mr and Mrs Simpson of Halenberg Station east of Luderitz in whose garden the plants were found.
