For Conrad (Konrad) Moench (Mönch) (1744–1805), German professor of botany at the Collegium Medicum Carolinianum (1781) and at Marburg University (1785) until his death. He was the founder of the Marburg Botanical Garden. An outspoken critic of Linnaeus’s sexual system (together with other German botanists such as Heister, Haller, Gleditsch and Medikus) and strong opponent of Linnaean classification, generic concepts and nomenclature. He wrote Methodus Plantas Horti Botanici et Agri Marburgensis (1794), describing 674 species in the garden and surrounding areas, restoring the names and genera of Tournefort wherever possible, as did his Supplementum ad Methodum Plantas (1802), which added 634 more flowering plants.
