Short etymology:
The Portuguese navigator Vasco de Gama sighted the coast along what is now Durban on Christmas Day in 1497 and named the country Terra Natalis, a name which embraces ‘the earth’ and ‘Christmas Day’, which the Portuguese call ‘Dia de Natal’, Latinised as Natale Domini, hence La. natalia. (Natal’s full name is now KwaZulu-Natal.)
