Etymology of Nymphaea:
La. nymphaea = water-lily; Gk. nymphe = goddess of springs, general name for delightful, mythological, semi-divine water-maidens (Virgil), also bride; (Nymphaios = sacred to the nymphs); referring to the water lilies, of which there are many in this genus.
