Gk. onyx = claws (hence clawed base of petals); otos = ear; alluding to the auriculate petal claws.

Cormous geophyte, 10--20 cm. Leaves lanceolate, margins ciliate, uppermost about halfway up the stem. Flowers sessile in short spikes, white to pink, styles free, filiform. July--Sept. Rocky and clay slopes, NW, SW, AP, KM, LB (Bokkeveld Mts to Swellendam and Agulhas).
