Etymology of Ophthalmophyllum:
Gk. ophthalmos = eye; phyllon = leaf. The upper epidermis is lens-like, letting in light for photosynthesis.
Etymology of schlechteri:
Named in honour of the German Rudolf Schlecter (1872-1925) and his brother Max (1874-1960), renowned plant collectors from South Africa.
