Genus Pechuel-Loeschea

For Moritz Eduard Pechuël-Loesche (1840–1913), German naturalist, geographer and traveller. After finishing school, he joined the merchant navy and travelled extensively for many years in both the Pacific and Atlantic oceans as well as visiting both poles. He then studied geography and natural history at Leipzig University, obtaining his PhD in 1872. Thereafter he collected plants in the Cape, Hereroland and the Congo (Loango expedition 1873–1876), became Henry Morton Stanley’s agent (1882–1883), visiting the Congo again and German South-West Africa (now Namibia) (1884–1885). In 1886 he became a lecturer at Leipzig before becoming professor of geography in Jena and Erlangen (1895–1912) and publisher of the third edition of Brehm’s Animal Life (1890–1893).
