Gk. pelargos = a stork; referring to the beak of the fruit which resembles a stork’s bill (cf Geranium, Erodium).
Etymology of populifolium:
From Populus, the poplar tree and the Latin folia = 'leaf'; with a leaf resembling a poplar.
