Etymology of Penaea:
For Pierre Pena (1535–1605), French physician to Henri III of France, botanist, and ecclesiastical assistant to Matthias de L’Obel (1538–1616) (see Lobelia). In collaboration with Mattias de L’Obel, he published Stirpium adversary nova (1571) and Seu Plantarum stirpum historia (1576) which was later translated into Flemish. In Stirpium they described some 1 300 species, including the localities where they were collected, mainly around Montpellier, France, and in Switzerland and the Netherlands. The two works had a huge number of wood engravings. These early botanical books describing plants followed pre-Linnaean principles with the emphasis on leaf analysis.
Etymology of cneorum:
Named after the genus Cneorum, the spurge olive (Rutaceae) from the Western Mediterranean (C. tricoccon) and Canary Islands (C. pulverulentum). It has yellow flowers in four-parts and fruit in three-parts.
