For Heinrich Karl Hermann Hoffmann (1819–1891), German botanist, mycologist, plant geographer, professor of botany and director of the botanical gardens at Giessen. He studied medicine at the University of Gliessen and physiology at the University of Berlin under Johannes Peter Müller (1801–1858). Hoffman was a pioneer in botanical phenology, especially in relation to climatic conditions and geography – plant distribution and migration – and wrote many other works related to plant physiology and mycology. He conducted research into the biological aspects of fungi, especially in relation to fermentation, putrefaction and disease, and also performed early investigations in the field of bacteriology.
