Etymology of Phytolacca:
Gk. phyton = plant; Hindi lakh = dye. The fruits stain badly. The juice of the fruit is crimson red because the plant contains betalain – red nitrogenous pigments found in certain plants, such as beetroot.

From the Latin abyssinicus = ‘relating to Abyssinia’
