Short etymology:
Gk. pikris = sharp or bitter. Although many sources state ‘allusion unclear’, these Old World yellowflowered herbs usually contain a bitter-tasting substance, hence ‘bitter-weed’, and some species have hooked bristles, hence common names such as ‘prickly ox-tongue’ and ‘hawkweed ox-tongue’.
