Gk. pleios = many, full of; peltis = small, round shield: referring to the peltate scales covering the immature sori.

Perennial with widely spreading rhizome. Fronds spaced, coriaceous, stipe sparsely paleate, lamina simple, entire, narrowly elliptic, to 20 cm long, minutely lacerate-paleate beneath. Sori oval, to 4 mm in diam. Forest epiphyte or lithophyte, to 800 m, SW, LB, SE (Cape Peninsula to tropical Africa, Madagascar, tropical and S. America).
