For Pierre Poivre (1719–1786), French horticulturalist, plant collector, traveller and author of Voyages d’un Philosophe. He visited China, Indochina, the Philippines, and the Île de France (Madagascar, Mauritius, and Seychelles), first as a Catholic missionary, later for French colonial agriculture. In the1760s, Poivre became administrator of Île de France. For six years he worked to develop the islands, introducing spice plants, such as clove, nutmeg, pepper and cinnamon and other Asian species. He also smuggled spices to France to break the Dutch monopoly of the spice trade. In Mauritius he created the now world famous botanical garden of Pamplemousses. His name translated from the French means ‘pepper’.
