For Giulio (Julius) Pontedera (1688–1757), Italian botanist, physician, and plant collector. He studied at the University of Padua, qualifying as a doctor in 1715 and becoming professor of botany at Padua in 1719, as well as praefectus of the botanical garden of Padua. He authored Compendium tabularum botanicarum, which described 252 plant species growing in Italy, and other books. He rejected Linnaeus’s ‘biological’ taxonomy system, which led the angered Linnaeus to use the derogatory name of the family Narcissoides Pontederia, after him. (The word Narcissus Gk. Narkissos is the name of a youth who fell in love with his reflection in water, hence self-worship.)
