Etymology of Prismatocarpus:
Gk. prisma = a thin saw, hence angular; karpos = fruit. The slender inferior ovary becomes greatly elongated; the fruits are shaped like prisms.
Etymology of schlechteri:
Named in honour of the German Rudolf Schlecter (1872-1925) and his brother Max (1874-1960), renowned plant collectors from South Africa.
