Etymology of Protasparagus:
Gk. protos = first, earliest, foremost; Asparagus (q.v.). Many species, particularly from Africa, were once included in this genus as they seemed different to the asparagus genus found elsewhere having formidable hooked spines, etc. These species have now been incorporated back into Asparagus.
Etymology of pearsonii:
Named after Professor Henry Harold Welch Pearson (1870-1916), the first director of Kirstenbosch Botanic Garden in South Africa.

Protasparagus pearsonii (Kies) Oberm.
