Etymology of Protea:
Gk. After Proteus, a mythological sea-god, who could change his form at will, taking new shapes. Seemingly Linnaeus was so over-awed by the variety of plants sent to him from the Cape that he named the genus Protea. The authors could not confirm this.

Named after renowned botanist, businessman, artist and philanthropist, Harry Bolus (1834-1911) after whom the Bolus Herbarium of UCT is named. Five genera are named after him and over 100 species. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_Bolus
