Etymology of Psammophora:
Gk. psammos = sand; phorein, phorus = to bear or carry. In its natural habitat the leaves are protected from excessive transpiration by a coating of sand.
Etymology of nissenii:
Probably named after Sonke Nissen, a railway engineer who was involved in the building of the Luderitz-Keetmanshoop railway line.
