Etymology of Psammophora:
Gk. psammos = sand; phorein, phorus = to bear or carry. In its natural habitat the leaves are protected from excessive transpiration by a coating of sand.

From the Latin saxum = ‘boulder’ and cola meaning ‘loving’; referring to the plant's preference for rocky habitats
