Etymology of Pteleopsis:
Gk. ptelea = an elm tree; -opsis = resembling. The two-winged fruits of P. myrtifolia resemble those of the common European elm in shape and colour, but not in size (Plantzafrica.com).
Etymology of obovata:
From the Latin ob- = ‘in opposite’ and ovatus = ‘egg-shaped’; the narrow side is on the side of the stalk
