Etymology of Pyracantha:
Gk. pyr = fire; akanthos = thorn; alluding to the brilliant fiery colour of the berries and, to some extent, the spines. ‘Firethorn’.

From the Latin angustus = ‘narrow’; and folius = ‘leaf’.
