Etymology of Raphionacme:
Gk. rhaphys = needle or beetroot; akme = sharpness; referring either to the leaves on short stalks that end in a sharp point, or to the bitter taste of the tuberous roots.
Etymology of burkei:
Named in after Joseph Burke (1812-1873) who travelled to the Transvaal with Zeyher in 1840.
