For Alfred Barton Rendle (1865–1938), British botanist, assistant keeper (1888–1906), then keeper (1906–1930) in the department of botany at the British Museum. A graduate of St John’s College, Cambridge (MA 1891) and London University, (DSc 1898), he lectured in botany at Birkbeck College (1894–1906). He was botanical editor of Encyclopaedia Britannica (1911), editor of the Journal of Botany (1924–1938) and wrote The Classification of Flowering Plants (Volume 1, 1904, Volume 2, 1925), also co-authoring five other books. He served on the editorial committee dealing with botanical nomenclature (1905–1935). He became a Fellow of the Royal Society (1909), president of the botanical section of the British Association (1916), and president of the Linnaean Society (1923–1927).
