La. restis = rope, cord-like; referring to a common use for the plant. Restios is known to have been used for rope.

From the Greek ‘lepto’ / ‘leptos’ meaning ‘delicate’; and the Greek ‘clados’ / ‘klados’ meaning ‘twig’.
