For Friedlieb Ferdinand Runge (1795–1867), German analytical chemist. He obtained a medical degree from Jena (1819) and a doctorate in chemistry from Berlin (1822). He taught chemistry shortly at the University of Breslau (now Wrocław, Poland.) From 1831–1852, he worked as a chemist in a chemical factory at Oranienburg. During his career, he analysed coffee and identified caffeine, examined the dilation effects of belladonna (deadly nightshade) on the eye, determined the various components of coal-tar oil, did research on synthetic dyes, developed a process for obtaining sugar from beet, and pioneered the concept of paper chromatography, about which he wrote two books.
