Etymology of Salvadora:
For Juan (Joan) Salvador y Bosca (1598–1681), Spanish apothecary, botanist, and plant collector from Barcelona. As a young naturalist, Salvador collected animal and flora specimens in the Mediterranean wildlife areas such as Iberia, Catalan and the Balearic islands. Several generations of his family carried on his tradition. The herbarium Salvador at the Botanical Institute of Barcelona houses some 4 025 specimen sheets, one of the oldest, most well-documented and preserved collections in existence. Salvador’s correspondence with the foremost botanists of his era, such as Herman Boerhaave, Sébastien Vaillant and the like, is also preserved.
