Etymology of Sarcocaulon:
Gk. sarx, sarkos (sarco) = flesh; kaulon = stem; referring to the fleshy appearance of the stem.
Etymology of mossamedense:
Named after the locality of the species, Mossamedes (Namibe), on the south-west coast of Angola. Mossamedes also occurs in Brazil.
