Etymology of Sarcocyphula:
Gk. sarx, sarkos (sarco) = flesh, fleshy; skyphos = drinking bowl; -ula = diminutive; referring to the cup-shaped fruiting bodies (apothecia).
Etymology of gerrardii:
Named after naturalist and traveller William Tyrer Gerrard (?-1866) who collected in KwaZulu-Natal in 1860.
