For Friedrich Richard Rudolf Schlecter (1872–1925), German botanist, botanical explorer and plant collector for 19 years in South Africa (1891–1897), where he worked for Harry Bolus as a herbarium and library assistant, and in Mozambique, West Africa, Indonesia, and New Guinea between 1898 and 1910. In 1913, he was appointed to the staff, later curator, of the Berlin-Dahlem Botanical Museum, where, except for during World War I, he worked until his death. A world authority on orchids, he described more than 1 000 species of orchids and published more than 300 scientific papers, as well as other major publications, including those relating to New and Old worlds, and tropical US and Chinese-Japanese regions.
