Short etymology:
For Frédéric Schlumberger (1823–1893), French gardener and cacti collector who lived in Les Château de la Haye des Authieux in Authieuxsur-le-Port-Saint-Ouen on the outskirts of Rouen, France. Charles Lemaire named this cactus for him in 1858 in recognition of a number of submissions Schlumberger made to Revue Horticole between 1854 and 1857. Other writers have suggested that the attribution should be made for Frederick Schlumberger (1804–1865), but an internet article, Origin of the Generic Name Schlumbergera, makes a strong case in favour of the first-mentioned Schlumberger (www.pxc.me.uk/misc/schlumbergera.html).
