For Selmar Schönland (1860–1940), German botanist. He studied at Berlin and Kriel universities, obtaining a PhD in 1883. In 1886, he was appointed curator of the Fielding Herbarium, Oxford, also obtaining an MA degree. He came to the Eastern Cape in 1889 to take up an appointment as curator, and later director, of the Albany Museum. His main interest was the herbarium, founded by WG Atherstone in 1860, which became the second-largest herbarium in South Africa. When Rhodes University was founded in 1904, he became a member of the council and the first professor of botany (1905–1926). He played a leading role in the Botanical Survey of South Africa (1919), which was initiated by Illtyd Buller Pole Evans.
