La. senex = an old man. The white, hairy pappus of the seeds is reminiscent of an old man’s beard.

Stout, tufted, thinly white-woolly perennial to 80 cm, basal leaves occ. dead at flowering, petiolate, oblanceolate, finely serrate, margins revolute. Flower heads radiate, in lax corymbs on leafy scapes, yellow, involucres conspicuously calycled. Aug.--Apr. Grassland, SE (Baviaanskloof Mts to N Province).
