Etymology of Senecio:
La. senex = an old man. The white, hairy pappus of the seeds is reminiscent of an old man’s beard.

From the town of Cathcart in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa, named after Sir George Cathcart, governor of the Colony of the Cape of Good Hope, 1852–1853
