La. senex = an old man. The white, hairy pappus of the seeds is reminiscent of an old man’s beard.

Glandular-hairy, rosulate perennial to 60 cm. Leaves oblanceolate, lobed to toothed to lacerate. Flower heads discoid, in lax terminal corymbs, usually magenta. July--Oct. Sandstone slopes in fynbos or grassland, NW, SW, KM, LB, SE (Cedarberg Mts and Cape Peninsula to S tropical Africa).
