Etymology of Sickmannia:
For Johann Rudolph Sickmann (1779–1849), German, soldier, botanist, plant collector and faculty member of the University of Hamburg from 1844 to 1849, although he was not a professor. He collected plants in Germany, France and Switzerland, and also ran an antiquarian bookshop. At times Sickmann stood in for Professor Johann Georg Christian Lehmann (1792–1860), when the professor was temporarily on leave. Lehman’s interests were physics, natural history and botany. He founded the University of Hamburg’s botanical garden. During these times, Sickmann, his assistant, took charge of this botanical garden. He was the author of Enumeratio Stirpium Phanerogamicarum circa Hamburgum Sponte Crescentium (1836).
