Shrub or small tree to 10 m. Leaves dark green, leathery, elliptic, obtuse. Flowers 1-few in axillary clusters or cauliflorous, greenish-white. Fruits fleshy, black. Dec.--June. Sand dunes and coastal bush, SW, AP, LB, SE (Cape Peninsula to tropical Africa).
