Short etymology:
Gk. sisyrinchion, possibly from sys = pig; rhynchos = snout; possibly alluding to swine (pigs) grubbing the plant roots for food or even eating this plant. Hollombe suggests Gk. sisyra = goat-hair cloak; or sisyrna = garment of skin and relating to corm tunics.
