Etymology of Sphalmanthus:
Gk. sphalma = a stumble, false step, error; Anthos = flower; apparently referring to its rooting from surface runners. This genus does not have deep roots.

From the Greek ‘calcyna’ / ‘kalkynos’ meaning ‘with a noticeable calyx’ or with the petals being calyx-like.
