Etymology of Sphalmanthus:
Gk. sphalma = a stumble, false step, error; Anthos = flower; apparently referring to its rooting from surface runners. This genus does not have deep roots.
Etymology of stayneri:
The specific epithet honors Frank Stayner (1907-1981), the curator and horticulturist of the Karoo Botanic Garden.
