Etymology of Stachys:
Gk. for a spike (originally ear of wheat); referring to the inflorescence that is often a spike.
Etymology of schlechteri:
Named in honour of the German Rudolf Schlecter (1872-1925) and his brother Max (1874-1960), renowned plant collectors from South Africa.
