For Thomas Pearson Stokoe (1868–1959), Yorkshire-born legendary mountaineer and important fynbos collector. He came to South Africa in 1911, joined the Mountain Club in 1913, and climbed extensively the mountains of the southwestern Cape. He discovered nearly 150 plants previously unknown to science, and ‘rediscovered’ many plants only known from the early collectors at the Cape. Thirty-one Cape flowers and one beetle are named after him. He is perhaps best known for his discovery of Mimetes hottentoticus in the Kogelberg Reserve, named after the Hottentots Holland Mountains. He died shortly after his 91st birthday after becoming ill while climbing with Rycroft and never fully recovering.
