Short etymology:
For James Vere (1739–1803) of Kensington-Gore, a wealthy silk merchant who had a large collection of plants, some very rare, and also collected botanical art that was displayed in Curtis’s Botanical Magazine and elsewhere. The gentleman’s magazine and historical chronicle, Volume 49, indicates he had ‘literary talent’. Seemingly, he was a founder of the Royal Horticultural Society, but he was not at the founders meeting because, although initial discussions commenced in 1800, the founding meeting was in 1804, by which time James Vere had died.
