For Dominique Villars (1745–1814), French physician and botanist, doctor of the Military Hospital of Grenoble (1782), professor of botany in Grenoble (1795–1803), and later professor of botany and dean of the faculty of medicine at the University of Strasbourg. His main work is Histoire des Plantes du Dauphiné, published in three volumes between 1786 and 1789, in which about 2 700 species (particularly alpine plants) are described after more than 20 years of observation. His herbarium and botanical manuscripts are preserved at the Muséum d’Histoire Naturelle de Grenoble. He was a correspondent of the Royal Society of Paris, the Royal Society of Sciences of Turin, and the Linnaean Society of London, among others.
