For Otto Heinrich Volk (1903–2000), German professor of botany. He studied natural science at Munich, Vienna and Heidelberg, obtained a doctorate, and in 1930 started work at the University of Würzburg. In 1937, he went to Namibia to carry out research and was interned during World War II, during which he taught botany to many interns, including Johan Wilhelm Heinrich Giess. After the war, he developed an interest in medicinal plants and collected in Spain, before moving to Kabul, Afghanistan, as a visiting lecturer (1950–1952), where he collected some 1 600 specimens. In 1953, he returned to Würzburg and became director of the Institute of Pharmacognosy until he retired in 1972. During his career, he botanised in Tanzania, South African, Namibia (seven visits between 1956 and 1985, gathering 6 000 specimens), Ecuador, Peru and Argentina. His publications centred on plant geography.
