Short etymology:
For Johann Friedrich Wolff (1778–1806), German physician, botanist and entomologist, author of the monograph Commentatio de Lemna published by Altdorfii et Norimbergae (1801), and other papers. His most important work, published in five volumes (1800–1811), was done in two languages: the Latin version entitled Icones Cimicum Descriptionibus Illustratae (An Illustrated Description of Bugs) and the German version Abbildungen mit der Wanzen Beschreibungen. The work was completed by Johann Friedrich’s father, John Philip Wolf, after his son’s early death. Of interest, the smallest flower in the world is Wolffia globosa, at only 0.4 to 0.9 millimetres.
